Hello! I am Rebecca Johnson, and I am the 5th grade Math and Science teacher. I graduated from Ridgecrest High School (aka Paragould High School) a looong time ago. I worked for several years and started a family before going to college. I graduated from Arkansas State University in 2009 with my bachelor’s degree in middle level education. I am certified to teach 4th through 8th grades.
I graduated in 2009 with a BSE in Middle Level Education and in 2012 with a MSE in Curriculum and Instruction. This summer, I completed a MSE in Gifted, Talented, and Creative.
Several years ago, I was chosen to attend the Mickelson/Exxon Mobile Teachers Academy in New Jersey. It was a 5-day, very intense, learning experience that focused on Math and Science teaching strategies. Only 200 teachers across the United States get to participate each year. It was quite an honor to get to go. I have also spent a week of intensive training focused on educating students who are on the Autism spectrum. Just a few years ago, I was honored to serve the ETS (the group that develops the Praxis series of assessments for many professions) by providing input on the Science Praxis that educators must pass in order to be certified to teach science.
At school, I serve as the chair of the 5th grade level PLC (professional learning community) and the chair of the science PLC. I am also humbled to be a part of the Schoolwide Leadership Committee. This amazing group is working together to make our school the best it can be! I have learned a lot about our school by being a part of this committee.
I have taught at Bay since I graduated in 2009. I spent the first four years of my career teaching 5th grade math and science. I absolutely love 5th grade; it is truly where my heart is at. The past six years, I taught 5th and 6th grade science. Now, beginning my 11th year of teaching, I get to go back to teaching 5th grade math and science. I am quite intimidated-it has been so long since I taught math!
I spent a few years working in a factory prior to working in a hardware store. I worked in the hardware store for six and a half years. I worked my way up from being a cashier to being the hardware department manager. Later, I got to be the paint department manager when the company expanded into Jonesboro.
My husband and I got married in 1998! We have a son who is engaged to a young lady who is already like a daughter to us and a daughter (my step-daughter) who got married to her wonderful husband this summer. Since we no longer have baseball, softball, volleyball, or basketball to keep us running, we decided to take up hiking. We absolutely love hiking in Arkansas’ beautiful state parks and it is our intention to visit every single one. Our fur-baby, Lola, is an avid hiker. She is always so excited to go on adventures with us. She is a seven year old dachshund, who may or may not be a bit overweight.
When I am not teaching, I enjoy reading. I read almost every genre of book-there is always a really good book out there waiting for me to discover it! I love doting on my niece and nephew who live in Paragould, too. I really REALLY miss my niece and nephews that live in Bowling Green, Kentucky. I play spider solitaire and candy crush. I am on Facebook and Instagram. I also have a thing for anything that helps me organize something, school supplies, educatational tv shows, science museums, sports cars, trucks, and I sometimes enjoy watching the New York Yankees play baseball.
